A Hand Directed by His Soul
When we are confronted by the paintings of Jorge Imana, one thing immediately
comes to mind: Although his highly skilled technical qualifications are ever
present, they are only tools to create images of passion to portray the artist's
dramatic and sensitive representations of the Indian and Mestizo people that
populate Latin America. This is apparent by the way Imana portrays his subjects
hard-working hands, weathered faces and bare feet. Further, the deep spiritual
beauty of their soul is depicted by looking at their eyes staring off into the
distance, or maybe the future, with such intense melancholy.
Often in Imana's works, his subjects are dressed in garments with the colors of
the rainbow, surrounded by jungles, atop mountains or simply waiting patiently
in the mercados with their fruit and flowers. There are frequently children
playing or working in the fields, or climbing safely in the arms of their loving
mother.
In other creations, Imana takes us by the hand to walk together along the
isolated beaches of the pacific or along the paths of a lush gardens and paint Central
American bamboo forest. Always, Jorge Imana is a poet who translates the world
as he sees it - a world dominated by his intense love of humanity and his deep
respect for nature.
